The set of more than 330 indicators monitoring over 70 regional priorities was developed to analyse changes taking place in Polish regions and assess progress in areas relevant to sustainable development and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at the regional level. Unlike global and national indicators, the regional priorities and the corresponding indicators have been adapted to the socio-economic and environmental specificities of Polish voivodships.
Work on developing the set of regional priorities and monitoring indicators was undertaken in response to the growing demand for territorial data, as well as in line with the 2030 Agenda principle of “leaving no one behind”. The work was also inspired by recommendations from the United Nations, the OECD and Eurostat, highlighting the role of regions and cities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. An important impulse also came from the experience gained during the preparation of Poland’s Voluntary National Review on SDG implementation in 2023, which highlighted the need to take the regional dimension into account.
The regional priorities were identified on the basis of an analysis of the National Strategy for Regional Development, voivodship development strategies, and other strategic documents relating to the social, economic and environmental development of regions. The adopted approach aimed to ensure consistency between regional and national priorities while taking into account the specific challenges and potential of individual voivodships.
The regional indicator proposals submitted by Statistics Poland are based primarily on official statistics data available at the voivodship level and in other territorial breakdowns. The selection of indicators took into account their relevance to the monitored issues, the possibility of regular updates, and the comparability of data across regions.
