| The school is understood as an organizational unit established on the basis of the founding act or entry in the register by a government administration body, a local government unit, a legal person or a natural person under the provisions of the Education Law. The school provides education of a certain type and at a certain level, has a statute issued by the body or person running the school, specifying, among others, its name, type, governing body and internal organization. Schools and pre-school facilities (including kindergartens) may be public and non-public. General secondary schools is a post-primary schools leading to the award of the secondary schools matriculation certificate upon passing the matriculation examination. The duration of education is 3 years (for secondary school graduates) or 4 years (for primary school graduates, from the 2019/2020 school year), and in bilingual schools (bilingual branches) with an enrolment class - one year longer. Graduates of general secondary schools after graduating from the highest program class obtain secondary education, which gives them the opportunity to apply for admission to post-secondary schools. After passing the matriculation exam, they are entitled to apply for admission to higher education. Special school is an educational institution for pupils/students with a statement of special educational needs. Special education is conducted in special schools or in mainstream schools in which special, integration, mainstream sections are established, as well as in special education and care centres, other educational establishments, healthcare institutions (including health resorts) or in the form of individualised instruction.
General secondary school for adults means a school in which an upper secondary school with separate organisation of education which admits persons who are or will turn 18 in the calendar year in which they are admitted to school.
Graduates of general secondary schools for adults acquire secondary education on completion of the highest (according to the curriculum) grade, which allows them to apply to post-secondary schools. Having passed the matriculation examination, they become eligible for higher education. Complementary general secondary schools were schools operating from the 2004/2005 school year on the core curriculum of a vocational school. The study lasted 2 years. Graduates of supplementary general secondary schools after graduating from the highest program class received secondary education, which gave them the opportunity to apply for admission to post-secondary school. After passing the matriculation exam, they obtained the right to apply for admission to higher education. From the school year 2012/2013, as a result of amendments to the Act on the education system, recruitment to the first classes of supplementary general secondary schools (for youth and adults) was completed.
