Methodological explanations

The indicator reflects the level of limitations in access to medical examination and treatment, excluding unmet needs in the area of dental care.

The data used to calculate the indicator are derived from the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC). They cover persons aged 16 years and over living in private households and refer to needs arising during the 12 months preceding the interview.

The indicator is expressed as the percentage of persons who reported an unmet need for medical examination or treatment due to one of the following three reasons: financial reasons, waiting list, or too far to travel.

The concept of unmet need for medical examination or medical care is based on the respondent’s own assessment of whether they required medical examination or treatment but did not receive it or did not seek it.

Medical examination and treatment refer to individual health care services (medical examination or treatment, excluding dental care) provided by or under the direct supervision of medical doctors, or by equivalent healthcare professionals as defined within national health care systems.
