Methodological explanations

The indicator measures the extent of actions undertaken by internet users to assess the credibility of information and content found on online news sites or social media.

The data required to calculate the indicator are provided by the European Statistical System (ESS), established under Regulation (EC) No 223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council. The ESS constitutes a partnership between Eurostat, national statistical institutes (for example, Statistics Poland), and other national authorities in each Member State responsible for the development, production and dissemination of European statistics.

Data are derived from the survey on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in households. This is a representative survey covering persons aged 16–74 living in private households.

The numerator is the number of respondents using the internet who undertook actions aimed at assessing the credibility of information or content found online, while the denominator is the total number of respondents using the internet.

Actions undertaken to assess the credibility of information or content found online are understood as carrying out at least one of the following activities:

a) checking sources or searching online for additional information;

b) following or participating in online discussions concerning the information being verified;

c) discussing the information being verified with other persons offline or consulting offline sources.
