Methodological explanations	The indicator measures judicial activity of courts in relation to the population. The numerator comprises criminal cases and non-criminal cases resolved by courts of first instance. The denominator is the total population. The indicator is expressed per 100 thous. population. Data on the number of resolved court cases are derived from administrative justice records. Population data are provided by Eurostat based on data supplied by the statistical offices of Member States. Criminal and non-criminal cases are defined according to the methodology of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ). A case resolved at first instance is a case completed by judgment or other decision in the reference year that terminates proceedings at first-instance level.
